This thesis entitled “A Study of Buddhadhamma in Yi Peng Tradition of Lanna” has three objectives: (1) to study the history of Yi Peng tradition of Lanna, 2) to study the ritual pattern of Yi Peng tradition of Lanna, and 3) to study the principle of Buddhadhamma in Yi Peng tradition of Lanna. This study is qualitative research methodology by using the methods of data collection from Tipitaka, research papers and interviews from 10 Sangha administrations and experts with using structured interview and analyzed data by content analysis in descriptive presentation.
The results of this research found that
Yi Peng festival in Lanna is the twelfth lunar month that is on the full-moon day of the twelfth Lunar month of the central region. Counting the month of Lanna is faster than two months the central region due to the month of Lanna people is to count the lunar calendar. Yi Peng tradition is Loi Krathong festival according to Lanna tradition that arrange on the full-moon day of the twelfth lunar month in the the chronicles of Yonok and Chamdeviwong. There was a record that had caused the cholera in the Hariphunchai region, the townspeople had to migrate in Hongsawadee for up to six years, therefore returning to the same country. When the time returned to the date that leaved then bring the offerings, incenses, and candles into the water in order to show the nostalgia each other, light hits the water it was a shadow of the light like the spark and it seemed Phi Khamod that liked to eat at night. Therefore, Lanna people called according to the legend of Yonok and Chamdeviwong that “Loi Khamod Tradtion”
The pattern of Yi Peng in Lanna has preparatory work on the 13th day of waxing moon called “Preparation Day”, on 14th day of waxing moon called "Wan Da", and on the 15th day of waxing moon called “Dhamma Day by having a ritual that practiced and inherited, including to give alms to the monks (Tan Khan Khao) for showing gratitude to the parents, to release the smoking kites for showing the worship of Phra Ket Kaeo Chulamani and the harmony power of the community people, to listen to the Vessantara Jataka for showing how to listen to what is auspiciousness to life and to meet the good friends, lighting the lamp and listening to Dhamma that virtues show to the worship of what should be worshiped by belief and faith, lighting fireworks indicates to worship the Buddha combined with the ceremony of the Vessantara Jataka, and Loi Khamod shows apologizing to the Ganges River and the remembrance of relatives.
Buddhadhamma principle of Yi Peng tradition in Lanna appeared the principles of Pujã, Saddhãdhamma, Kallayãnamitaradhamma, Sãmaggîdhamma and gratitude that has value and importance to community, life way and mental. These Buddhist principles can apply properly to the current social conditions for peace and maintaining a good cultural traditions, support to do creative activities that will make knowledge and pride in the local community continually.
